Have you hugged yourself today?

Our whole lives we are told what to do and what not to do. We are taught to share, and think of others first. While this is good advice, the continual life lesson seems to have skewed our view of the “I” in team. Selfish is usually not a word that people would like to ascribe to themselves. However, just like a Chinese Buffet, I believe everything should be practiced in moderation.

Before you grimace, I’m not saying to completely disregard kind words of praise for others or sharing, but we hardly take the time to give ourselves that little pat on the back. If God used His amazing wisdom and power to make us, why not revel in the fruits of His labor? I’m not saying to requisition a billboard be put up for completing a crossword puzzle, but take the time to be thankful for YOU.

Even if there are people around you congratulating you, there is nothing more annoying than individuals who continually berate themselves and devalue their numerous accomplishments just to avoid sounding ‘full of themselves.’ I mean, what else would you be full of? (I could tell you, but not remain a gentleman.)

I am continually in awe of the people around me. A family full of messed-up, perfectly imperfect individuals who continue to make accomplishments, overcome their flaws, be all the better because of them, and face life head on. There are times I think my family is like a car wreck in slow motion that you just can’t seem to not look at. But we also have our moments of clarity where I can practically hear the Hallelujah Chorus. I am proud of each and every one of us, and I hope that they all take a little time each day to look at their personal accomplishments and individual worth. I hope they all know what they contribute to their family, their community, and to the people around them.

So, during your morning coffee or in between verses of ‘Ain’t No Mountain High Enough’ in the shower, take the time to shortly reflect on everything that is you, take a beat, and get on with your day.
